Pyramid Timeline

Bobby Alexander founded Pyramid Contracting in Irmo, SC in 2003. With just a handful of dedicated employees, we set out to build something special – not just buildings, but lasting relationships and trust.

Our early years were about laying a strong foundation. While many construction firms struggled during the 2008 economic downturn, our commitment to solid principles kept us growing.

By 2013, our hard work was paying off – we began winning awards for our municipal and institutional projects, such as the 2013 Historic Preservation Award and 2014 AIA Honor Award.

In 2014 we received The Honor Award by the AIA of South Carolina for our project with the City of Columbia & Quackenbush Architects to provide our ever-growing community with the new Parks & Recreation Administration Building. Located in the Earlewood neighborhood just north of downtown Columbia, Earlewood Park features this impressive community center along side amphitheaters, baseball fields, basketball courts, and a one-of-a-kind playground.

2015 marked a turning point. We joined the SBA’s 8(a) Construction Program and expanded into federal military contracts. Our dedication didn’t go unnoticed – in 2018, we were proud to be named “South Carolina’s 8(a) Construction Firm of the Year” by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

In 2016 Pyramid Contracting completed an impressive design-build project in Richland’s John Hughes Cooper Library. Two years later, The AIA of Columbia honored Pyramid Contracting, Boudreaux Group, McMillan Pazdan Smith, and Margaret Sullivan Studio with their 2018 Merit Award for professional excellence manifested in design and construction.

In May 2018, Pyramid Contracting was named the South Carolina Small Business Administration’s (SBA) 8(a) Construction Firm of the Year. The award was accepted by Bobby Alexander, the company’s owner and president, and his mother, Monica Alexander

In 2020, we expanded our footprint to the Lowcountry, opening our Summerville, SC office, and enabling us to better serve our customers in Myrtle Beach, Charleston, and coastal areas.

In 2022, Pyramid broke ground on our new headquarters in Irmo, SC, a showcase to our design and renovation expertise, as well as our self-perform abilities, and a symbol of pride for our skilled workforce.

In 2023, we celebrated 20 years of hard work and dedication by our amazing team at Pyramid Contracting, while looking forward to our next 20 years of growth and success.

In 2023, Pyramid was named to Varco Pruden’s Hall of Fame for their construction project at MIWON Specialty Chemicals, USA in Columbia, South Carolina. This project earned Hall of Fame recognition as the Best-in-Class Winner in the Manufacturing Category. The highly competitive Hall of Fame Awards are presented annually to the independent authorized VP Builders whose work reflects innovation and excellence using Varco Pruden building systems by creating exceptional architectural appearance, efficient design, and effective end-use.

In 2024, we further expanded our footprint to the Upstate, opening our Greenville, SC office, and enabling us to better serve our customers in Spartanburg, Anderson, Clemson, and surrounding areas.

In 2024, we were proud to be awarded the Historic Columbia Preservation Award for our meticulous renovation of the 1915 built Hillman’s Sporting Goods and Community Finance Company buildings. For more information on this and other award winning projects, see our Accolades page.

In 2024 we were awarded the Large Business of the Year by The Greater Cayce-West Columbia Chamber, who said “Pyramid has been instrumental in revitalizing areas within the CWC, including upgrading homes in the River District and developing dormant business sites.”

From those early days in Irmo, we’ve grown to:
- 3 strategic commercial locations
- 60+ talented team members
- Operations across SC, NC, GA, and VA
- A diverse portfolio of projects
What hasn’t changed? Our unwavering commitment to quality, safety, and integrity. Whether it’s a small renovation or a major development, we bring the same dedication to every project we touch.
